Our Story
Solfiskur, meaning “sunfish” in Icelandic, is a collection of jewelry, accessories, and functional goods crafted from sustainably sourced fish leather. Each piece is made using salmon and cod leather sourced from a small tannery in North Iceland, where the material is tanned over the course of a month using 100% geothermal energy.
My connection to this material began in Iceland.. a place I return to year after year for its raw beauty, deep respect for nature, and cultural reverence for resourcefulness. It was there that I discovered fish leather for the first time at a locally owned tannery and was immediately drawn in.. not just by its texture and durability, but by the story it carries. A material once used by Vikings for sword hilts, shoes, and weatherproof garments, fish leather holds centuries of history, ingenuity, and survival.
Today, that legacy continues through a modern lens of sustainability. Fish skin, often discarded as waste, is transformed into a strong, flexible leather.. supporting a more circular and responsible approach to fashion and design. Solfiskur is proud to align with initiatives like the Slow Fish movement and the Oregon Ocean Cluster, supporting local fishing communities, transparent supply chains, and the goal of utilizing 100% of the fish.
At its core, Solfiskur is about honoring materials, minimizing waste, and creating pieces that feel both intentional and distinct. What began as a jewelry line is expanding soon into fly fishing gear and custom goods for restaurants and beyond.. each design rooted in the belief that what we wear and use can tell a deeper story.
